YOUR WORLD
6th Annual Newport News Sister Cities Art Competition for Youth Ages 13 to 18
Newport News, Va., - For over twenty years, the Sister Cities International (SCI) Young Artist Showcase (YAS) has encouraged youth from around the globe to visually express Sister Cities’ mission of promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation — one individual, one community at a time. For the fifth year, Sister Cities of Newport News (SCNN) invites youth in our community to submit art for the local competition that feeds into this international showcase of young artists.
According to SCNN Executive Director Kate Helwig, the competition’s theme changes annually and is established by Sister Cities International. “This year’s theme -- Your World, is intended to allow students to share artistically, their vision of peace.”
Locally, SCNN will award the top prize of $200. The winning Newport News entry will be submitted to the
Sister Cities International (SCI) Young Artist Showcase (YAS). SCI will select 10 finalists. One artist from the U.S. and one from
abroad will be selected by SCI as the overall winners and each awarded a complimentary registration to the 2010 Sister Cities Youth Conference in Albuquerque, NM along with $1,000 toward airfare to the conference or as a cash prize.
